Ranger Leonel Espino Chavez, Mexico

Reserve ranger: Leonel Espino Chavez
Country: Mexico
Partner organisation: Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG)

Leonel has been working for GESG for four years and in 2013 he was designated a WLT Keeper of the Wild. He is in charge of Las Arenitas, Tinaja and La Hierbabuena reserves, and patrols the mountainous region of Sierra Gorda on foot or on horseback, on the lookout for poaching and other illegal activities.

He is particularly skilled in wildlife tracking and plays a key role in GESG’s wildlife monitoring programme. Roberto Pedraza, GESG’s Technical Officer, describes Leonel as an excellent tracker. “He knows his territory really well and always knows the best places to put camera-traps.”
